Guide

Modern Do-It-All Mountain Bike

Description

Theme

We all love having many bikes, but in the end, we tend to gravitate towards “that one special” bike! Therefore, this guide is dedicated to the modern do-it-all mountain bike. The 2019 Ibis Ripmo has earned its reputation as a well-rounded mid-travel enduro 29er. This is a competent machine equally at home in the chunk as well as the ascent to the top.

Frame & Fork

The foundation of the build is the carbon Ibis Ripmo in Black/Olive. The Ripmo is a long travel 29er but has modern geometry that allows it to climb much better than it has a right to do. A number of reviews list this frame as possibly the best utilization of the DW-Link suspension platform. Combined with the Cane Creek Helm Air 29 fork in an Ibis recommended 44mm offset, makes for a lightweight and highly tunable package. This fork has clearance for a 2.6 tire, has all the adjustments a tinkerer could want, and it’s made in the USA.

Drivetrain

The drivetrain begins with a SRAM GX Eagle groupset but the shifter and crank have been bumped up to the XO level. For the shifter, the XO was chosen as it’s the brains of the shifting and has a bigger impact on the feel of the shifts as well as getting you access to an adjustable thumb shift lever position. The cranks are bumped up to XO as a place to shed 112 grams and gain some stiffness with some added bling.

Cockpit

Raceface, Cane Creek, Lizard Skins, and PNW Components make up the cockpit. A Raceface Next carbon bar and Turbine-R stem combo are mated to the fork via a Cane Creek 40-Series headset. The bar is a 760mm wide offering, giving just enough width for tight singletrack, while providing enough leverage for control. The lizard skin grips are one of the few stock items on this build as they are custom matched to the olive green in the frame. For the dropper post, a PNW Components Bachelor 170mm was chosen for its balance of performance and value paired with PNW’s own Loam Lever with orange lever pad. Yes, the details matter!

Brakes

If there’s a significant splurge on this build, it’s the choice of Hope Tech 3 E4 brakes. While they are a significant expense in the build, the performance gain is worth it. The lever feel is smooth, consistent, and powerful, while keeping tons of modulation.

Wheelset

In order for this build to excel in technical situations, a quality hub with high engagement is best. The i9 Enduro S wheelset was chosen for its balance of ultra high engagement hubs and value oriented steel spokes. It has a moderately wide 30.5 internal rim width which will comfortably accommodate the 2.4 WTB tires. For most rides, the Trail Boss/Ranger combo was chosen for the lower rolling resistance. The tan sidewalls were chosen over black for a bit of old school style, but the black sidewalls are much easier to source.
